Obviously, that goes into some very gray areas that might as well label you viewing child porn. Things get even more awkward as some older audiences feel uncomfortable from fanservice that depicts young, teenaged characters flashing their exposed skin all for the world to see. However, the two have bled over to the other demographic from time to time, like the "bishōnen" or "bishi" male protagonists of some shōnen series. Obviously, the two gender-specific fanservice are mostly confined to their respective shōnen and shōjo series. Men can be hunks of meat on display as well. However, that doesn't mean only women are objectified in fanservice. As such, most fanservice seems to come from the female characters and directed toward male audiences. Why is it that most of my comments on fanservice so far have been mostly talking about the female anatomy? Well, simply put, society sees males as sex-hungry pigs that desire nothing more than a peak at a woman's exposed breast. In fact, let's talk about that for a moment. However, fanservice can also sometimes just be a fun, little extra for fans that the creators want to say "Thank you for supporting our work!" Sometimes that results in cool artwork of their favorite characters in swimsuits or other art, and sometimes it results in rather demeaning images for both the character and their gender/sex. It's as if the fanservice had to make up for the lack of writing, and that can be very annoying. It feels especially insulting as the series is actually extremely popular despite rather mediocre writing and artwork, and the fanservice wasn't even that much in its earlier arcs. For example, I absolutely abhor the fanservice featured in Fairy Tail due to the author's insistence of featuring its female characters in provocative state of dress or angling the manga panels to focus heavily on their breast or buttocks and groin. Obviously, that isn't always the case, but it can feel very demeaning. That could be considered very insulting for many viewers as it could be suggested that the people behind the work are looking down upon their audience. The most obvious is to bring in viewership for the more lowbrow. Honestly, there are all kinds of reasons why fanservice appears in a work. For the most part though, it's all about the sex appeal. ![]() "Fanservice" generally refers to sexual titillation featured in media, but could also refer to other kinds of gratifying things for fans, such as having a fan in-joke be featured in the series. Let's begin this analysis with a look at term itself. However, I do not believe fanservice alone would result in a bad work. ![]() Less perverted otaku have decried many a series thanks to highly prevalent fanservice within them. ![]() It can completely ruin an experience as ridiculous breast sizes and random panty shots are shoved into the face of a viewer/reader…you know, when they aren't drooling perversely from it and reaching for the closest tissue box. Now that I have your attention with that image, let's talk about fanservice it's everyone's favorite and most despised aspect of Japanese entertainment.įanservice is a highly controversial feature amongst both critics and fans of anime and manga. While it doesn't affect the editorial overall, I thought I'd at least offer the option of a link to the editorial with images in the description box below. A small thing I should mention: For my certain Unlimited Discussions, I also put up images with "funny" little captions when I write them for leetNEET.
